Seattle Sounders FC fires Apam Onyekachi & two other Nigerians


Seattle Sounders FC USA, The club, who also have Obafemi Martins in their fold, announced yesterday that it is declining the contract options of eight players from its current roster. The club is declining contract options of the following players: goalkeepers Josh Ford and Marcus Hahnemann; defenders Onyekachi Apam and Djimi Traore; forwards Tristan Bowen, Sean Okoli, Cam Weaver and Eriq Zavaleta. Additionally, defender Jalil Anibaba is out of contract.

Onyekachi Apam, 27 joined Sounders on a free transfer in September 2014 and didn’t play a game for them. Sean Okoli played three games for Sounders before he was loaned to play for a second division side Orange County, where he played two games. Jalil Anibaba who played 17 games for the MLS side ran out of contract and not offered a new deal.

The three players were among the eight players who were let go by the club ahead of the 2015 season. The club co-owner and general manager said it was a difficult decision which was necessary.

“In our league it’s a consistent challenge to keep successful teams together, and these types of decisions are always difficult,” said Sounders FC Owner and General Manager Adrian Hanauer. “Having said that, conversations are ongoing with several players about their respective futures with our club, and as we continue to shape the roster for 2015 we’ll have additional announcements to share.”
