This is a breaking news that occurred few minutes ago. A five-alarm fire was burning in a senior living apartment complex in northeast Dallas early today, forcing firefighters to conduct evacuations even as they fought the flames, reports CBS Dallas station KTVT.
At least one person was killed, authorities said — the body was found in an apartment. Searchers were coming the complex to be sure no one else was inside.
Flames and heavy smoke were showing when firefighters first arrived at the Gatewood Apartments around 2:15 a.m.
Dallas Fire-Rescue told KTVT several people were calling the fire dispatch office asking to be rescued, and some 300 residents were brought out, some with the use of ladders. The Red Cross was assisting.
Many residents were hard to rescue because they were in wheelchairs or needed extra assistance
Some were taken on stretchers to ambulances, as well as a staging area. At least three were transported to a hospital.
One woman told KTVT she crawled through hallways to safety — and a neighbor rescued her parrot.
More than 150 firefighters were on hand.
