An Official Bulletin of the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo was made available to newsmen in Lagos on Saturday stating the processes to refund the difference between its old school fee regime and the new one to students.

Gov. Babatunde Fashola, had on August 7, reversed tuition fees in the university from N350, 000 for medical students and 197,000 for arts and humanity students to the old rate of N25, 000.

The state government also directed refunds to students who had paid the higher fees.

The bulletin said that following the reversal, the university management submitted a request for refund of N843 million to all the affected students. It said that the request had since been reviewed by the Lagos State Ministries of Education and Economic Planning and Budget.

The bulletin said that the final document would be submitted to the Lagos State Executive Council for final approval.

Meanwhile, Prof. John Obafunwa, the LASU Vice-Chancellor, told NAN that some students had suggested that the money should be deducted from the next session payment, but that would not be possible.

“Since we have submitted a request for a refund to the state government and it had been approved, it is not possible again for us to deduct the difference from the next session fees,’’ he said.

Obafunwa urged parents and guardians as well the students to exercise patience as the refund would be done as soon as the money was released.

  1. I think to me, the state government’s action to return difference in school charged on Lasu Students is an after-thought. What Fashola ‘s decision to revert back is as a result of the forth-coming election was meant to win the hearts of many Nigerians residing in Lagos back to their folds so as to win more voters. It is an after -thought. It shows the level of bad governance on the part of Fashola. It is very disgusting for such a Lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) to exhibit high level of inhuman behaviour, barbaric and oppressive policy against the people that voted for him. The last has not been heard of atrocities he had perpetrated against the citizens. One would recall Fashola’s attempt to expropriate Aunty Ayo Comprehensive High Schhol, Keffi Street, Ikoyi lasy year when he ordered the management of Aunty Ayo International School, Biaduo Street, Off Keffi Street, to take possession on 23rd Setember, 2013. It was resisted by PTA and on 24th September,2013, the PTA was on their way to protest at NTA, V.I. but it leaked to Fashola who quickly blocked them at the School of Nursing Awolowo Road. The governor behaved in a barbaric manner like area boys, shouting with fear and invited them for a meeting at Lagos House,Marina to plea for understanding. There are many cases of the governor’s landgrabbing through the use of force against the people who voted for him. The return of the differences in the school fees is just a piece of the icebergs on atrocities especially crime against the citizens. Fashola should search his conscience on victimisation of Judicial Officers and abuse of discretionary powers which he swore to uphold. He must PURGE himself if God will forgive him. This is a belated issue.
