Gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen has destroyed a community in Governor Gabriel Suswam’s village in Benue State, killing about five persons.

Several others were abducted during the attack.

The armed militia invaded the Jootar community in Ukemberagya/Twarev council ward of Logo local government of Benue state and burnt houses and farm produce.

Affected residents of the attacked area said that the gunmen stormed the place in the night, between last Saturday and yesterday.

According to them, the insurgents have surrounded all other neighboring communities and are planning to launch further deadly attacks on the agrarian communities.

This is coming just as the suspected herdsmen have abducted scores of farmers in Vaase area including women and children.

“They stabbed commercial motorcyclists and raped several women in the place”, eyewitness said.

The special assistant to the governor on media and public affairs, Chief Joseph Anawa, an indigene of the area, said in a telephone interview yesterday that hundreds of farmers are displaced.

He noted that the attacks have persisted even as security operatives are stationed in the areas.

The police public relations officer, ASP. Ezeani Ameachi confirmed the attacks yesterday but however, said the command is yet to ascertain the number of deaths. He said heavily armed policemen have been deployed to the areas to prevent further attacks.
