It was gathered that a 27-year-old lotto operator, Daniel Apu, with his four customers escaped death by a whisker on Friday as a tipper crashed into his shop located at No. 88, Amuzukwu by Niger Street in Umuahia.
Although the accident, which occurred around 8am, claimed no life, the shop in front of which the lotto operator had his canopy were seriously damaged by the tipper.
The shop also serves as a base for a roasted corn seller and an auto electrician, who luckily had not arrived the scene before the accident occurred.
A bag of corn shell was seen trapped under the tipper while the plastic chairs and other lotto materials belonging to the lotto operator also littered the ground.
In an interview with our newsmen, the lotto operator, who still looked traumatized, attributed his narrow escape from the claws of death to an act of God.
According to Apu, he was busy attending to customers that early morning when they suddenly noticed the lorry racing towards the shop.
“How I found myself on the other side of the road is what I cannot explain,” a perplexed Apu said while narrating his experience to newsmen. The lotto operator said he was still at a loss over what actually happened, but thanked God for saving his life and those of his customers.
Apu, however, said he lost his wallet containing N26,000 when he fled for his dear life and expressed sadness over the development.
“My sweat for the last two days is gone,” he cried. “I brought some money from home and added to it this morning to give to my oga,” he added.
Speaking on what may have caused his vehicle to veer off the road, the 35- year old tipper driver, Mr. Joshua Ikechukwu, blamed the accident on a jeep driver who was negotiating a bend towards Amuzukwu Road without any recourse to on-coming vehicles.
Ikechukwu said he was descending Uwalaka Street by Amuzukwu-Niger Road junction when the jeep, which was trying to avoid a hole created by a broken slab in the middle of the road was accidentally hit by his lorry.
