It was gathered that a suspected cultist, Augustin Nwokocha, has revealed that he beheaded a member of a rival cult group, simply identified as Onyemazuwa, because of his belief that the victims was involved in cultism and had killed several people in Etche local government area of Rivers State.
Nwokocha, from Obibi community in Etche local government area, made the revelation yesterday when the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Rivers State Police Command paraded him and 287 others, including four girls, who were arrested over cultism, armed robbers and kidnapping at the headquarters of the Swift Operations Squad (SOS) in Port Harcourt.
The suspect, who was wearing military camouflage, said, “His name is Onyema Azuwa; he is from Okehi (headquarters of Etche local government area), and he is a game-boy (cultist). I beheaded him because he is a cultist and has killed several people in Etche.”
Speaking to newsmen, the police public relations officer (PPRO) in the state, Ahmad Muhammad, said a total of 162 suspected cultists, 29 suspected armed robbers and seven suspected kidnappers were arrested in May 2015.
Muhammad also said a total of nine suspected armed robbers, two suspected kidnappers and two suspected cultists were killed during separate encounters with men of the state command within the same month.
According to him, 31 of the suspected cultists were arrested on Sunday, May 31, 2015 after a gun battle between men of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and suspected cultists at Rumuekini community in Obio/Akpor local government area of the state.
The police image maker further said another five suspected cultists were on that same day arrested when men from the unit stormed a suspected hideout of cultists in Chokocho community in Etche local government area of the state.
Muhammad stated that a total of 34 firearms of various sizes, 174 ammunition and cartridges as well as a total sum of N296,760.00, including N10,000 suspected to be fake currency were recovered within the period.
