The state chapters of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), at the 2016 Workers’ Day celebration, yesterday, gave Governor Ayodele Fayose, marching orders on 20 requests. They included immediate payment of all outstanding salaries and allowances.
Among the demands, 12 of which was from NLC while eight came from the TUC, labour urged Fayose to pay gross monthly salary rather than the net, release the report of April 2015 workers verification exercise, promotion of eligible officers, pay all outstanding leave bonuses and immediate constitution of state boards and commissions, among others.
At the event which was low keyed owing to the death of six medical doctors and a driver, the workers offered prayers for Nigeria’s economic revival.
In an address by the chairmen of NLC and TUC, Com. Ade Adesanmi and Com. Odunayo Adesoye, labour urged Fayose to audit the current wage bill of workers in the state, which it claimed stood at N2.6billion.
According to them, the recommendation could not be escaped as the same figure was claimed by the administration of ex-Governor Kayode Fayemi.
Adesanmi in his address, specifically urged the governor to pay the workers their gross salaries, rather than the net, noting that that was the best way to alleviate the plight of the workers who depended on cooperatives and bank loans to meet many routine demands.
