An Ikeja High Court on Thursday sentenced a 24-year-old bus conductor, Toyin Rilwan, to 21 years imprisonment for armed robbery.
Justice Sedotan Ogunsanya handed down the verdict after finding the convict guilty of a two-count charge of conspiracy and armed robbery.
Ogunsanya, while delivering her judgment, said:“The prosecution was able to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the defendant conspired with another to rob one Alhaja Rasheedat Irawo.
“In view of Section 295 (2) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, the defendant is sentenced to 21 years imprisonment with effect from Aug. 25, 2012.”
Earlier, during the proceedings, counsel to Rilwan, Mr O. Ajanaku, in his plea for mitigation of sentence, urged the court to have mercy on the convict.
“The defendant is a very young man. I pray that the defendant be given a new shot at life.
“He had been reformed in custody and the defendant can still be very useful to the society,” Ajanaku said.
During the trial, the prosecution led by Mr Adebayo Haroun , had told the court that Rilwan, whose address is unknown , conspired with another person now at large, to rob Irawo of her possessions.
He said that the offence was committed at 2.00 p.m. on Aug. 25, 2012 at No 17, Anjorin St., Olota Shopping Complex, Oshodi, Lagos.
“Rilwan and his accomplice robbed Irawo at gunpoint at her shop at Oshodi market.
“Her gold necklace worth N700, 000 was removed from her neck during the ordeal and an unspecified number of textiles were stolen from her shop,” Haroun said.
The prosecutor said luck, however, ran out on Rilwan when Irawo raised an alarm causing him and his accomplice to flee.
“An angry mob gave Rilwan and his accomplice a hot chase, Rilwan was caught but his accomplice fled.”
The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 295 (2) and 297 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.
