Not even a cameo appearance from Diego Simeone’s son could help Argentina avoid defeat by Portugal.
In one of the early matches at the Rio Olympics, goals from Goncalo Paciencia and Pite secured victory for the European side.
Giovanni Simeone, who plays his club football for River Plate, came on as a second-half substitute for Julio Olarticoechea’s side.
The Group D clash was evenly matched during the first half before Johnathan Calleri hit the bar shortly after the break with a chipped effort.
And Portugal took advantage of the missed opportunity midway through the second period.
Paciencia received the ball on the edge of the box and fired past Geronimo Rulli in the Argentina goal.
And any hopes the South American nation had of rescuing a point were diminished when Pite scored from range with an effort that slipped through Rulli’s legs.
Simeone then had an effort blocked on the line in injury time as Argentina slipped to their first defeat at an Olympic Games in 20 years.
They won gold in 2004 and 2008 but didn’t feature in 2000 or 2012.
Argentina take on Algeria on Sunday while Portugal face Honduras earlier the same day.
