The Dream Team VI now boast of all the medals in the men’s football event – same as the European countries.
Nigeria may have won the bronze medal of the Rio Olympic Games, but they also equaled a record set by Hungary, East Germany and Serbia in 1972, 1976 and 1984 respectively.
Samson Siasia’s side sealed a 3-2 victory over Honduras in the third place encounter played in Belo Horizonte, after missing out of the final after a 2-0 defeat to Germany.
But the win ensures that Nigeria becomes the fourth country after Hungary and Serbia to win the Olympic football men’s gold, silver and bronze medals and also the first African side to achieve that feat.
The Dream Team VI got the gold medal after their 3-2 victory over Argentina in the 1996 Games staged in the United States of America.
In Beijing 2008, Nigeria had a silver medal to show for their impressive outing, while in Rio they won the bronze medal after surviving Honduras scare.
