United should play Marcus Rashford with Zlatan Ibrahimovic – Shearer

Manchester United’s current problems in the Premier League would be helped by Marcus Rashford playing in a front two alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic, former England international Alan Shearer has said.

United have only won one of their last six league games, suffering defeats against Watford and Chelsea in that run.

Speaking in his role as a pundit on Match of the Day the Premier League’s all-time top goal scorer said United need more pace alongside 35-year-old Ibrahimovic’s experience, and Rashford, 18, could provide that.

“[Ibrahimovic] looked better when Rashford went up front with him in the second-half. It added more pace to the game,” Shearer said of United’s goalless draw with Burnley, a game that saw them manage 37 shots without finding the back of the net.

“Ibrahimovic has never been blessed with great pace, but when you get to your thirties, you lose a yard of pace. Craig Bellamy came to help me at Newcastle with his pace.

“I feel as though that’s what Manchester United need, to have him up front along with Rashford to ask more questions going in behind rather than facing up all the time.”

Ibrahimovic scored four goals in his first three games for United but has only managed two goals in his past 12 appearances, despite having a number of good chances against Burnley.

“You’d fancy him to walk away with at least four or five,” Shearer added. “Tom Heaton made some brilliant saves, one of which was just superb. They kept on going, they kept on passing it, they kept on creating the chances.

“Some of [Burnley’s] defending was brilliant. You just know that it isn’t working for you whatever you try.”

Shearer believes Jose Mourinho’s continued tinkering with personnel and tactics has contributed to United’s problems.

“He doesn’t know his best XI yet,” Shearer said. “He’s playing around with the team and the formation as well. He’s still trying to work it all out.”
