The 35-year-old’s current deal expires at the end of the season, while Jose Mourinho has suggested that he wants to keep the midfielder at Old Trafford for another campaign.

But The Sun claim that United have not even opened negotiations with Carrick, which means he’ll be free to sign a pre-contract with a European club from January.

Carrick has featured just seven times this season, with Mourinho claiming that he needs to use the midfielder sparingly due to his age.

But despite his lack of appearances, United have won in all but one of the games Carrick has featured in under Mourinho this term.
