Amelia: “Does he want to do what, honey, i hope you were not bored” she kissed Bernard on the head, and gave her sister the stink eye.
Bernard (Emeka): “Sweetheart, your sister kept me company. I have been meaning to ask, what about my friends, don’t I have friends?” he asked’
Amelia: “Here we go again… honey, come on, you were an extreme introvert but you had a friend, Mr. Bindalo, he was more like a father figure to you” she said and stuttered as she spoke.
Bernard: “Why hasn’t he come to see me?”
Amelia: “He… has been out of the country, he will be back tomorrow” she stumbled over her words. Bernard (Emeka) gazed at her, his brain was trying to send a message but there was a maze blocking it. Annette watched this uncomfortably, her conscience was troubling her, but she kept hardening her heart. She could not avoid the kind of scandal the truth would cause; she had worked all her life to get to where she was, it was too late in her life to start all over again. It wasn’t such a bad idea that he would be getting married to Amelia; her sister was every man’s dream, when you looked past her character, she was beautiful, and rich, but that was going for her. She was trying to quiet the ramblings of her conscience when her sister shoved her.
Amelia: “Earth to Annette, where is your mind?”
Annette: “Sorry, today was hectic at the hospital, I should go home”
Amelia: “Not so fast, while you were zoned out, I was giving you a great news, I am pregnant”
Annette: “Really?” she said sarcastically as she perused her sister for the telltale signs of pregnancy.
Amelia: “Maybe you should freeze your eggs seeing as you are not getting any man soon” she said and winked at her sister. Annette just smiled tightly and went away, but Amelia followed her to her car.
Amelia: “So you are not even going to congratulate me?”
Annette: “Oh I will, when you start showing some signs”
Amelia: “You wish you had Bernard, you wish you were as brave as I am”
Annette: “His name is not even Bernard, stop fooling yourself, whether I say the truth or not, this won’t be for long, it will crash because it was built on lies.” At this Amelia gripped her hand and shoved her against the car.
Amelia: “Listen to me bitch; remember if I go down, you go down, in the worst way. Don’t make me see you as a threat. Now get out of my house” Annette entered her car and drove off.
The next day. Amelia rushed to Bindalo’s office to intimate him of her plans.
Amelia: “Please I need you to act like my man’s friend” she said pacing the office.
Bindalo: “please do not involve in that mess”
Amelia: “I fucked you for years, I deserve, and no I demand some loyalty”
Bindalo: “Alright alright. Whatever”
That same day, in the evening, Amelia went out with Bernard, they were supposed to meet his alleged friend, but Mr. Bindalo cancelled on them, Obianuju had called for an important board meeting.
Amelia: “Baby, your friend had his flight postponed, lets just go shopping or something”
Bernard (Emeka): “I was really looking forward to seeing him, there are things he can explain to me, that you cannot” Emeka said in disappointment.
Meanwhile, Annette had begun to investigate the woman on the television that got Bernard agitated. She found out that indeed Emeka was already married, and his wife was called Obianuju Udo. She paid a visit to Mekob Towers to get a glimpse of Obianuju, she was curious as to what Obianuju was like. She found out from a staff that Bernard as she knew him was the CEO of the company, but willed it to Obianuju on his demise.
Annette: “And he is alive and well…” she thought with a wicked grin on her face.
Three months later, Amelia had expected that she would be married, but no, Emeka had decided to cancel the wedding after she had sent the invitation card design to Paris to make customized invitation cards. She tried talking to him but he would not bulge. She thought of what she would do that would make him stop dragging his feet.
Amelia: “The only thing I can think of is giving him that company, but how do I do that when Bindalo will not sell to me. Now Mekob is doing so well, no right thinking person would sell” she thought within herself.
Emeka laid on the recliner thinking of what would have been if he still had his memory, perhaps he would be married to Amelia. She was exciting, exotic, she probably was the most beautiful woman in Lagos state, but there was something missing, he could not place his finger on it but he knew something was wrong. He had seen Amelia and Annette arguing the other day; Amelia had been violent with her sister, also she was not showing any signs of being pregnant. The most disturbing of all was, despite their great sex, there was a disconnect, he was not in love with Amelia, then how did he engage her. This had nothing to do with his memory loss, he just did not have any feelings for her. While he was pondering, he fell asleep, and in his dream, Ohamiri appeared.
Ohamiri: “Hahahahahaha, see what you have turned into, an empty palm kernel. You said because you have something dangling between your legs, you are fit to do battle with the goddess. I am Ohamiri, I control the waters, and I control lives, I do what I say I will do. I said I will destroy you, and I have done it. This is just the beginning, You and Obianuju, the slave of ohamiri who ran away, be ready , because this battles is not for humans, it is a battle for the gods. Hahahahaha” Emeka jumped out of the recliner, the shrill laughter still resounding in his ears.
Emeka:” What kind of a dream is this, who is Obianuju, where did the name come from” He kept muttering ‘Obianuju”, the more he said it, the more his head hurt because his brain was trying to pierce back the memories. A sharp image pierced his consciousness, it was the image of a girl on fire with people around her chanting war songs, he tried to pierce her face together, but he could not see her face, she was a faceless girl in his head. He got up and left the house, he wanted to take a stroll and clear his head. He bumped into a young man who smiled at him and gave him a handbill.
Young man: “ Please Uncle, I want to invite you to our program, Jesus is waiting for you there, He wants to give you your life back, He says you should give him your heavy burden, He says you should handle over the battle to him because, the battle is of the Lord’s” the young man said fervently.
Emeka decided, after much inner persuasion, to go the church where he was invited. He went to the front hall and sat down.
Pastor: “The lord is talking to somebody this evening. He is saying I care for you, bring your yokes to him, and bring your battles. That man there, I can see that you are wrestling with principalities and powers; they want to ruin your life and that of your wife. I say the Lord is on your case. Give your life to him and let him fight for you”. Emeka didn’t know when he got up from his seat and walked slowly, like he was carrying the burden of the whole world on his shoulders, tears were flowing down his eyes, he was convicted, and he was broken. The church began to sing “I surrender all” as Emeka knelt at the altar to receive the call of Salvation.
