Rio Ferdinand has urged Arsenal to tie Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil down to new contracts if they have any ambitions of winning serious silverware in the future.
The pair only have 18 months on their contracts at the Emirates Stadium and there is little sign of any imminent agreement between the club and players.
Reports from over the last week have suggested that all the parties are too far apart in their valuations at the moment and the Gunners would have to break their pay structure to give the duo what they want.
Ferdinand thinks Arsenal might have to back down from their hardline stance to get the deals tied up.
“Arsenal have to get Ozil and Sanchez signed up,” declared Ferdinand.
“There’s contract talks, 18 months left on their contracts. If Arsenal are thinking about challenging for any type of silverware, they’ve got to sign them up.”
Arsenal defeated Basel 4-1 on Tuesday night with a good display to top their Champions League group but Ferdinand doesn’t give them a chance of going all the way in the competition.
When asked about their chances of winning the trophy, Ferdinand replied: “Not for me. I think this is great for them in terms of getting the confidence and for the fringe players coming in and doing a job and staking a claim.
“But I just there’s too much quality elsewhere in this competition for them to compete.”
