Jose Mourinho has offered Anthony Martial an olive branch and promised the struggling Manchester United forward a chance to impress against Wigan this weekend.
The France international was omitted from Mourinho’s two most recent matchday squads following strong criticism from the Untied manager after a disappointing individual performance against Liverpool a fortnight ago.
‘I don’t think he lost his focus. I think he just didn’t catch with both hands a big opportunity he had,’ said Mourinho earlier this week.
‘I cannot give to one player chances to play and kill the others. I cannot give to the same player chance after chance after chance and not consider the effort of the others.’
Martial, who impressed during his first season at Old Trafford under the management of Louis van Gaal, has struggled for consistency since Mourinho’s appointment and has managed just six goals from his 23 appearances.
But the 20-year-old will be given the chance to impress this weekend and stake a claim for inclusion when United return to Premier League action against Hull on Wednesday.
‘I don’t know. I don’t speak with the players about how they take it,’ said Mourinho when asked how Martial had taken his most recent rejection.
‘But he will play Sunday and, if on Sunday he plays magnificently, he will play against Hull City in the next match. It’s simple.’
