Zainab Hassan, a five-year old girl who was born without anus has been slated for a surgical operation to open up her anal cavity at the Jos University Teaching Hospital,Jos, Plateau State, March, 2017.
The five year old girl medical expenses were paid by Mr. Mohammed Ogoshi-Onawo, member House of Representatives representing Awe, Doma and Keana federal constituency.
The mother of the girl, Mrs. Rakiya Hassan, in an interview with the Northern City News said she had sought for financial assistance from members of the public for the medical procedure for the past five years without success.
She explained that her daughter passed excreta and urine through her private part.
Hassan said, “I have been seeking for help from well-spirited individuals in the past five years to raise funds for my five-year old daughter to enable her to undergo surgical operations, but all effort did not see the light of the day until the federal lawmaker came to my daughter’s assistance.
“Little Zainab urinated and excreted through her private part for the past five years; we visited many hospitals and were directed to JUTH as series of test were conducted.
“The news of Zainab’s ordeal was widely carried by NTA Newsline some years back but no help came her way until my contact with Onawo just last two weeks.”
It was learnt that Onawo had paid a part of the medical bill with a promise to settle the outstanding balance before the surgery is carried out.
However, It was further gathered that Zainab’s father had abandoned his family following his inability to pay for his daughter’s medical procedure.
Meanwhile, the lawmaker has called on individuals with medical challenges to present themselves for free medical care.
He made the call during a reception organised in his honour by youths in his constituency who benefitted from federal appointments last month.
Onawo promised to stand by people in need of support and prayed for Zainab’s quick recovery.
