Grace was able to change her demeanor for the sake of her children. She held on to the memories of the good time she and Osaze had shared and tried as much as possible not to hate him. She prayed hard for a miracle to happen, she noticed that even her children were secretly fasting because of the sermon the Pastor had given the previous week on getting requests faster to God through fasting and prayer. She knew they missed their dad but for her sake, they tried as much as possible not to talk about him until one Monday evening, Sandra, unable to hold it in any longer decided to take the bulls by the horn and ask.

Sandra: “Mummy how are you today?” she asked nervously.

Grace: “I am fine my dear but why are you looking so nervous?”

Sandra: “When is daddy coming back? I miss my daddy mummy…please call him to come back” she bit back tears.

Grace: “He will be back soon, just be a little more patient okay?” she tried to draw her close but she backed away.

Sandra: “We have been waiting for him to come back, you told us he went on a journey, when exactly is he coming back?” her voice started rising.

Grace: “I said he will be back soon, please get out of my sight you little brat, do you know how much I am suffering now because of your useless dad?” she snapped.

Sandra: “My daddy is not useless, stop abusing my daddy. Everyone in my class is saying my dad abandoned us, that he is no longer coming back. Is that true mum”

Grace: “I said leave me alone before I spank the hell out of you. I don’t have time for petty talks like this so vamoose from my sight” at the back of her eyes she saw Alex walk into the living room with his head down. He went straight to his sister and stood by her side holding her left hand.

Alex: “Didn’t I tell you not to ask her anything? I told you it will make things even more difficult for her if you go around asking stupid questions”

Sandra: “But I want to see dad Lex, why is that stupid? How long has it been since he left?” she snapped and made to run out but Alex held her even tighter.

Alex: “I just don’t want mum to leave us too, do you want to be left all by yourself? Do you?”

Grace watched them with teary eyes and felt sorry for them, for yelling at the little girl.

Sandra: “No I don’t want to be left alone but I know that even if the whole world abandons me, my brother will not” she said, turned to face Alex and hugged him.

Grace could not hold back herself anymore and moved into their embrace too.

Grace: “I am sorry kiddies, I am sorry Sandra, I didn’t mean to yell at you, just that I miss your dad so much too and talking about him makes it all worst. Forgive me” she said as they disengaged from the embrace.

Sandra: “It’s okay mum, I am sorry too for making the hurt worst for you” she said while Alex reached out and used each palm to wipe the tears from their faces.

Osaze withdrew into himself after what transpired between the two of them that day. He stopped talking to her the way he used to and made every excuse to be away from her. What pained him the most was that she wasn’t saying anything about the payment of the studio the agent had sound for him.

That night as they slept backing each other, he felt her stir restlessly behind him. She turned to him and tapped him gently on the shoulder.

Zainab: “I know you are not sleeping, can you wake up please?” She said with a soft voice.

Osaze: “What is it?” he tilted only his head to look at her without turning fully.

Zainab: “Sit up now…please” she cajoled. Osaze sat up and she continued “I am very very sorry about that day dear, I am regretting my actions right now, so please can you forgive me so we can continue from the way things were before?”

Osaze: “You really think things can go back the way they were before after cheating on me then slapping me? You really think so?”

Zainab: “Of course, if you can forgive me from the bottom of your heart. I really don’t know what came over me with my not liking being called bitch. I am really sorry it wouldn’t happen again. Forgive me okay?” she said clasping his cheeks in her hands. She kissed him passionately knowing that if he returned the kiss, it would mean he had forgiven her. He relaxed after sometime and started kissing her back too, he could not believe how much he had missed having her lips in his mouth. He suckled at her lips, dipped his tongue into her mouth as she also suckled on it in return, she was a very good kisser. Osaze: “But I have been waiting patiently all these while. When exactly will it be? Tell me so I can at least prepare my mind for it”

Zainab: “What on earth is wrong with you man? Do you know how much responsibility I shoulder in this house? I am tired of your pestering. So you want me to just use my money to rent a studio for you after getting you across continents?”

Osaze: “What do you mean by that? Are you saying there will be no more photography for me?”

Zainab: “I am saying you should go out there and search for a job by yourself that is what able-bodied men do rather than just sleeping all day waiting for their women to shoulder their responsibilities”

Osaze: “Wow! Wow! It has gotten to this? Was this our agreement before I decided to leave my family to come here with you?”

Zainab: “Then it’s all about what you can get from me right? You know what? From now on, you will work to earn your living in this house. Until you are able to pay rent in cash, you will be doing the dish, cleaning this place, doing the laundry. That’s is called earning your keep. Hope you get it?”

Osaze: “Of course I get it! You are nothing but a liar, a usurper. This is what you destroyed my home for? You fucking freak of a woman” the veins in his neck popped out as he yelled at her.

Zainab: “Okay get out! Get out of my sight before I call the police on you.”

Without saying a word, he walked out of the room banging the door behind him.

He went out searching for a job two days later. Everywhere he went to, they told him to come back in a week or three weeks’ time besides he had no ‘working permit’ to work as legal resident, and time was a luxury he didn’t have. He needed to raise some money urgently. He decided that he had had enough for that day and went back home. As soon as he entered, he could hear multiple voices emanating from the bedroom. He tip toed to the door and what he saw almost took his breath away. Zainab was on bed with two men having a threesome sex. One penetrated her from the vulva and the other from the anus. Osaze cried out uncontrollably,
