Suspected adulterated kerosene has killed six persons in Ogwashi-Uku town, near Asaba over the last few weeks, with investigation revealing that the product has also resulted in several explosions during domestic use.
A female primary school teacher and her son (names withheld) at Isah-Ogwashi-Uku, were killed in an explosion last month. It was also gathered that most of the explosions were from cooking stoves, which the victims tried to light.
The state Government through the state Commissioner for Special Duties, Mr. Chika Ossai, said they have moved into action to investigate the product presently in the market in Ogwashi-Uku and other areas of the state, adding that the perpetrators would be brought to book.
A female student (name withheld) in Ogwashi-Uku who recently was also a victim is currently receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital outside the town.
Unconfirmed sources claim that the dealers of this “killer kerosene” were arrested by police last year but subsequently released after bribing the police.
However, the Police PRO, Mr. Andrew Aniamaka refuted this, adding that they were on the trail of the dealers.
Efforts to speak with officials of the Nigerian National Petroleum Co-operation (NNPC) in the area proved abortive as they refused to talk, but said they were not aware of any adulterated kerosene in the market.
