She took her time to study him quite well. Dave had nothing like deceit in him. He was a shy guy who found it difficult to approach women and so had to remain single for a very long time. While they were still on the friendship level, he took her home and his parents especially his mum took a liking to her and started disturbing him to consider having her as wife. He told them about her previous marriage and how he wasn’t sure she would agree to his proposal but they made him understand that everyone was not the same. She might have had a bad experience with her previous in law but in their family, they were not like that.
Sometimes, his mum would call her so they could hang out together, go shopping and go to spas together. She got to know how different the woman was from Lanre’s mum who never really liked her from the onset of their relationship. She knew the woman wanted her to marry her son but she just wasn’t sure she was ready for another marriage just yet so each time she brought up the topic, she would jokingly brush it aside and bring up another topic.
Lanre did not give up hope in his search for his wife. He had to call the company to ask of her, they were reluctant to disclose her address at first but after sometime and knowing he is her husband, they finally gave him her address. He decided to go there on a Saturday when he knew she wasn’t going to the office but unfortunately he picked the wrong day because she was with Dave when he knocked on the door and was asked in.
Nkeiru’s eyes almost popped out of their sockets when he stepped into her room. She and Dave were on the bed viewing the pictures they took the first time they met at Millennium Park. She sat up with a start and sent the phone flying across the bed. Dave was surprised at her reaction and looked at Lanre suspiciously.
Nkeiru: “He is my husband or he was my husband” she said indifferently for the sake of Dave.
Lanre: “Can we talk in private please?” he asked ignoring Dave.
Nkeiru: “No! Say whatever you have to say in his presence. He knows all of our story already” she replied not bulging from beside Dave or offering him a seat. “So what can I do for you?”
Lanre: “I am sorry. I have come to take you back home”
Nkeiru: “Come to take who back home?”
Lanre: “You are still my wife you know? I have come to take you back home with me”
Nkeiru: “You are really bold you know? I am not even supposed to e talking to you. Please who gave you my address?”
Lanre: “That does not matter does it? What matters is that I am back now and we can get back together now”
Nkeiru: “I am not going back with you not even over my dead body”
Lanre: “Honey…”he started going towards her but she stopped him.
Nkeiru: “Don’t come close to me and don’t ever call me honey again”
Lanre: “I know I hurt you real bad” he tried getting close to her again but Dave stepped in between them,
Dave: “Step back Mr. She said you shouldn’t get close to her. Please respect her wish” he said with a menacing look on his face.
Lanre: “Excuse me? And who are you if I may ask? What are you doing with another man’s wife in a room?” he returned the look.
Nkeiru: “Lanre step back now please…” she tugged on Dave’s trousers to sit down and he reluctantly did. “I have moved on Lanre. You should go back to your wife in the States now”
Lanre: “We are no longer together. We are divorced”
Nkeiru: “I see! No wonder you decided to come back. You need a woman to warm your bed right and you think I am the best candidate for that right? When you find another woman you feel you love, then you can treat me like trash and leave me in the lurch right?”
Lanre: “I have come to make amends honey. Please give me another chance, let’s forget the past and try work out the present. Please?”
Nkeiru: “Lanre get out of my room” she started being aggressive. “Because of your mum I lost my baby and instead of sympathizing with me, what did you do? You acted like it was my fault. I almost committed suicide because of you and now you want me to forget the past? You think sorry can solve everything in this world? I don’t want you in my life again. Right now I know what true happiness actually means, I don’t ever want to have anything to do with you again. Now with all said and done, can you leave?” she walked to the door and opened it ajar from him.
Lanre: “Are you sure this is what you really want? Are you doing this cos of this man? Don’t forget the devil you know is better than the angel you don’t know”
Nkeiru: “Yeah I know and I will not forget. You can go and marry your mother now, send my regards to her. Tell her the witch, the oloshi, the mad woman is doing so well where she is. Tell her I said thanks, we shall meet again someday” she said and walked out prompting Lanre to do the same.
Lanre: “Okay can you allow me to spend the night here please? It is getting late already and I cannot go back to Lagos today again. Please?”
Nkeiru: “Why will I let you do a thing like that? What are hotels for?”
He wanted to tell her he had no money for hotels but checked himself. He didn’t want her to know about his financial problems as that would make her even more convinced about not letting him back into her life. He walked out dejectedly not knowing where he was to go to. He decided to roam around in the park until late at night, then he would beg one of the drivers to let him sleep in the bus since he wanted to take the first bus back.
After he left, she broke down and wept on Dave’s shoulder.
Dave: “It’s okay dear. You did well” he patted her back gently.
Nkeiru: “Yeah yeah. I feel better now and light. I guess hearing him apologize like that healed my heart much better than telling myself I hate him” she said sniffing.
Dave: “So I guess you have forgiven him? If you haven’t then you should. Since you wouldn’t be doing it for him but for yourself”
Nkeiru: “Yeah I have forgiven him but I am never going back to him”
Dave: “Yeah you don’t have to. All you need do is forgive and wish him the best”
Nkeiru: “Okay love. Thank you so much” she said and smiled coyly.
When Vanessa came back from her date with Nkem, she filled her in on what had happened in her absence.
Vanessa: “Oh my God! I can’t believe I missed all that. Had I been around, I’d have treated his fuckup in a way he wouldn’t be able to forget in a long time. It pained me sha…kai” she said with regret. “But hope you feel better now?”
Nkeiru: “I feel more than better my dear. I am genuinely happy now. Very soon, I will send him our divorce papers. I am never going back there. I’d rather remain a spinster for life than go back to a marriage where I was treated less than an animal. I am done enduring marriage”
Vanessa: “Yeah! Marriage should be enjoyed not endured my dear. So guess what? Nkem proposed to me and I said yes” she lifted up her ring finger and there adorning it was a silver ring with a sparkling diamond at its centre. They both jumped up with excitement and hugged each other. Nkeiru was so happy for her friend at last.
Erica: “No you cannot go back, please don’t go back I beg you” she held on to her stomach. “The baby needs you alive. I need you too please” she pleaded desperately not knowing the right words to use in dissuading him from going back.
Boss: “It is Audu we are talking about. He has been a friend and a brother. I have to rescue him” as he said this, he remembered that in his haste, he hadn’t worn their normal army carmo and the jungle boots. He had worn jean trousers on shirt and only managed to take his mask. He knew then that it was time for her to know his true identity if he wanted to live for her. He reached for the back of his head and unfastened the mask, he removed it slowly and faced her. She almost collapsed…
Erica: “Patrick! Oh no!” she was dumbstruck, she could not believe her eyes.
Pat: “Yeah I have to go now. Like this, I will be able to persuade them that I am a civilian” he said and left their hiding place without waiting for her reply.
As soon as he stepped out into the open, he saw Audu running towards him away from a soldier who was on his heels. Their eyes met and a shot rang out, Audu stopped all of a sudden still looking at him. Then he smiled and fell down dead. he lifted his hands up in the air when the soldier aimed the gun at him too.
Pat: “I am just a civilian and my house is down the road” he said innocently. Another soldier ran up to the first one and recognised him immediately.
2nd Soldier: “Hey Patrick! What are you doing here? He is my friend and he was the one giving us information about this group from the onset. He called us last night about hearing gunshots nearby where he lives and that is why we are here, besides he is my friend” he said and the other soldier lowered his gun.
Pat looked at the boy lying dead on the floor and muttered “I am sorry” silently.
Pat: “Thanks guys for heeding to my call. My girlfriend was the one who was kidnapped that night. So I couldn’t help but come out here to know what was happening. I have been so desperate to see her rescued that when I heard the gunshots, my mind went to her first. I just took a bold step. I hid myself behind that tent over there to see if I could sight her, I thought you guys will not come soon enough. Thanks a lot” she shook their hands one after the other.
2nd Soldier: “You are brave man. Hope you found your woman? Besides this place reek of women and children, where do we take them all to? Especially the children” he asked worriedly.
Pat: “Yeah I did. Humanitarians can be reached out to. But we will discuss that later, I have to take her home, she has been battered both emotionally and physically by this people.
2nd Soldier: “Yeah sure! Go on ahead while we round the criminals up” he said.
She waited and prayed silently within her that he would be fine. She quickly buried the mask in the ground. He came back, drew her to himself and hugged her so tight. She pushed him back, she was yet to come to terms with him being Patrick, the man she revered. As they turned back to leave, little did they know that Locust who had been shot and laid some feet away from Audu was not dead. He had seen the exchange between Patrick and the soldiers, Saw him and Erica walking away and reached out for the gun in front of him. He conked it weakly, aimed at Patrick and drew the trigger and off it went kaboom!
Patrick stopped in his track all of a sudden, squeezed Erica’s hand and slumped down, blood oozed from the left side of his upper back…
Question: There is a saying in the bible which goes thus: ‘he who lives by the sword shall die by the sword’. Do you think it is the case for Patrick? Would you rather that Nk forgives her husband or move on with Dave?
