The Local government chairman of Ijumu Local Government area, Alhaji Taofiq Isah who also serves as Chairman, Association of All Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Kogi State chapter, as cleared the air over his reported arrest by the police in connection with the recent attack on Senator Dino Melaye.
Taofiq said that contrary to reports that he was arrested and whisked away by the police, he rather on his own volition honored an invitation given to him by the State Police Command where he answered some questions over the incident in local government area.
I’m a law abiding citizen. I’m the number one citizen of Ijumu local government area and supervisory ALGON chairman of Kogi State. Why should I just be arrested just like that? There was an incident in my area in which the senator made allegation against me. They only invited me to the police command and I told them what I knew, that was all.
We have a reformed police Organisation in Nigeria today under President Muhammadu Buhari and IGP Ibrahim Idris. Nobody can just be arrested illegally now. That only happened in the past. Police did not arrest me. The police are doing their job and anybody found culpable should be made to face the law”, he said.
He accused Senator Dino of stage managing the recent attack in order to create unnecessary tension and confusion in Ijumu local government area, adding that the lawmaker should rather focus on bringing dividends of democracy to the people of Kogi West instead of creating confusion.
Taofiq said he had no hands in the attack on Dino’s home as alleged, adding that as the Chief security officer of the local government area, it was his duty to maintain peace and security in the area and not to cause chaos.
I have been supporting security agencies in the local government area to keep the peace. We engaged some local vigilantes to team up with the police and these people have been working assiduously. We succeeded in wiping away kidnappers and armed robbers from our area,” he said.
He called on his people to remain peaceful and law abiding, urging those that want to fan the ember of problems to desist forthwith in the interest of peace and sustainable development in the area.
