“Oh! mamma, do the people hereabouts know I am married today? I was afraid they might not; and we overtook William Goulding in his curricle, so I was determined he should know it, and so I let down the side-glass next to him and took off my glove, and let my hand just rest upon the window frame, so he might see the ring, and then I bowed and smiled like anything.” – Lydia Bennet.
Lydia Bennet is a character from Pride and Prejudice, published in 1813, she had just gotten wedded and wanted the whole world to know about it. Is it just me or do married people flaunt their wedding ring?
It is not strange to find newly married people pushing their rings in our faces. I have been in a bus where the lady beside me was just flashing her ring in my face. Also, on social media, their style of taking pictures change, as their ring becomes the focal point of their pictures.
Even when they are talking to you on a normal day, they gesticulate a lot with their fingers, her hands are suddenly everywhere in your face!
It is as if they are trying, so hard I might add, to drive home the point that they have been engaged or married. It is as though they are saying “How dare you pretend like you don’t know I have been ringed” or “How dare you not congratulate me on getting married”. Wow!
This is not typical of all engaged women though, but it is something I definitely have noticed. I guess it is the euphoria of that new achievement. We humans, especially ladies, tend to be like that. When we buy new cars, we suddenly start taking longer routes or dangling our car keys. Even with new phones, we just bring them out to glide our hands over the screen and put them back. So I guess it is the same feeling with an engagement ring.
What are your thoughts on this, is it just me, or have you noticed your girlfriends flaunting their rings in your face, or taking pictures where the rings feature more than the face. Do let us know in the comment box.
