On hearing the knock on the door, Osato peered through the window to see the visitor. It was an old man who she had never met before. The man smiled at her, his weathered and wrinkled face creasing in an innocent smile.
Osato opened the door and stepped out.
Preacher: “you must be Osato, I believe.” He asked.
Osato: “yes I am. Is there any problem?”She asked, looking at the man suspiciously.
Preacher: “can you spare a few minutes of your time, I will like to share a brief word with you.” he said, bringing out his bible from his bag.
Osato looked at the bible and at the man. She debated within herself, whether to send the man away or to listen to him. She thought about everything that had been going on in her life and how no matter how hard she tried, things always go wrong. I have tried everything else. Why not listen to the man. It can’t hurt. Who knows, may be God will truly be concerned about a sinner like me.” She thought to herself.
Osato: “hold on sir.” She said, and then she ran inside the house.
Some few minutes later, she came back with a bench and her bible. Preacher smiled then he sat down and settled to preach.
Preacher: “Jesus Christ came for sinners not saints and the bible says all have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory. No one is exempted. So do not think that your case is different, your sins are too big, you are destined for hell and all that bad thoughts placed inside you by the enemy to make you lose faith. If you surrender to Christ today, every stain, every blemish will be washed away and you can live life as a new being. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that who so ever believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life.” He said.
Osato sat and she listened as she had never listened before and for the first time everything began to make sense.
Jackson and Amadi were playing a game of chess in Jackson’s apartment. They were sprawled on the rug in their singlet and boxer shorts. Jackson had just made a solid move on the board with his knight and he was taunting Amadi who stared at the board in confusion when a knock sounded on the door. Jackson went to the window and peered through and he saw a pretty lady standing there. She was dressed in a suit and trouser that hugged her figure well. She had a bag in her hand and an umbrella. She smiled at him when she saw him at the window.
Jackson: “who are you?” he asked, eyeing her figure lasciviously, then he frowned on seeing the bible in her armpit.
Rebecca: “Amanda sir. Can you please give me a minute of your time?” she replied, still smiling.
Jackson: “sorry I am busy.” He replied, turning away from the window.
Rebecca: “okay, let me leave this tract with you.” she said quickly. She opened her bag and brought out tracts filled with messages and selected one and stretched it to Jackson through the window.
Jackson looked at her and collected the tract. As soon as their hands touched, he froze.
Rebecca: “go to Osato’s place and kill her. Use whatever means necessary.” She said to the hypnotized Jackson.
She removed her hand and she smiled. Jackson smiled back at her
Rebecca: “God bless you.” she said and walked away.
Jackson turned back to the room and walked straight to his wardrobe to get his clothes.
Amadi: “guy where you dey go? Come make we finish this game now.” He said, staring at Jackson.
Jackson ignored him and went on wearing his clothes. When he was done, he dug deep and removed a gun hidden among dirty clothes. He placed it in his waist band then he walked out of the house without a word to Amadi.
As Damian finished dressing, prepared to leave, Ruth went to him and held his hands and asked that they should pray. After the prayer, she gave Damian a bible and told him to read Ephesians 6: 10 – 18. Damian opened the bible and read
Damian: “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints…” he ended and looked at Ruth.
Ruth: “you see that this is not a new thing. You have to bring all these things to bear in the fight against the devil. You have to be strong in faith. Finally do not let the people you see deceive you. It is what is in them; the evil that propels them. That is what we fight. Are you ready to fight the good fight Damian?” she asked.
Damian: “I don’t know. This is way above me.” He replied, staring at the bible.
Ruth: “when you get to Benin, answers will come. Let’s go.” She said.
Damian: “you are coming with me?” he asked in surprise.
Ruth: “I have invested too much time and energy on you to let you walk into the den of the serpent alone and unprepared.” She replied, picking her phone and her purse.
Damian: “I am going to see my sick wife not storm a building filled with thugs and criminals…” he said, looking at her in wonder.
Ruth:”you will be surprised at what comes at you from the innocent face of a sixteen years old girl or the weatherbeaten hands of a man of eighty. the enemy is everywhere, hidden behind in our society and you know the scariest part of it all, most of those who have made their bodies the temple of destruction do not know what they have attached to themselves. they do not know the evil that walks with them as their shadow.they do not know that they are being used by the devil to sow seeds of pain and confusion. So when you attack them, you solve nothing because there is a spirit in them; evil incarnate determined to destroy man. It is that spirit we fight. that spirit does not show itself on the face of any man. by their fruits, you shall know them. It pays to be wary Damian. Let us go.” She replied.
Osasu tossed and turned on her bed, disturbed by bad dreams; faceless monsters pursuing her over a strange land filled with skeletons, a red sun that gave no heat and rains that was blood. She moaned in her sleep, sweat beading the top of her lips, tears slipping out of her closed eyes. Mummy Uyi entered the room and stared at her for a moment. She brought out her phone as it started ringing.
Time Keeper: “It is time. Finish up whatever you are doing and get to Abuja immediately. A full moon rises in two days time. The grand council will meet then.”
Mummy Uyi: “I will be there.” She replied, looking speculatively at Osasu.
Time Keeper: “how goes your work?” he asked over the phone.
Mummy Uyi: “The bait is set.” She replied.
Time Keeper: “he comes with a guardian.” He warned.
Mummy Uyi: “and I have his heart. Do not fret, old man; let me work.” She replied acidly.
The call ended and she dropped her phone into her bag. Her eyes glittered as she picked an orange and sucked on it. “Let him come home to me. I will embrace him with thorns and feed him with worms. Let him come.” She thought and smiled.
Question: now we see that Mummy Uyi had a mission from the very beginning. Will she be able to use Osasu to destroy Damian? Will Jackson be able to carry out Rebecca’s command?
