Man in court for allegedly stabbing neighbour with a broken bottle

Olorunwa Ogundare, a 27-year-old man, who allegedly assaulted his neighbour, Shade Taiwo, by beating her up and using a broken bottle to stab her in the eye, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

Ogundare, a resident of Ipodo Street, Ikeja, is standing trial on a charge of assault, to which he pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Insp. Simeon Ihonwa, told the court that the accused committed the offences on July 14, at their residence.

Ihonwa said that the accused assaulted the complainant by beating her to a pulp and also using a broken bottle to stab her in the eye.

The prosecutor alleged that Taiwo said the fight started as a result of an argument which ensued between her and the accused.

Ihonwa alleged that the complainant said that the accused claimed she was very rude to him, so he decided to teach her a lesson by beating her up.

He said that all efforts made by other tenants in the compound to settle the dispute proved abortive.

The prosecutor alleged that the complainant reported the case to the police and the accused was arrested.

The offences, he said, contravened Sections 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Section 173 prescribes a three-year jail term for assault occasioning harm.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs B.O Osunsanmi, granted the accused bail in the sum N50, 000 with one surety in like sum.

The case was adjourned until Sept. 14, for mention.
