Neymar’s ‘plan’ to end Ronaldo-Messi Ballon d’Or hegemony is probably nonsense

It is well known that Neymar has great designs on winning the Ballon d’Or.

It was one of the motivations for leaving Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain for £198m this summer, according to many reports.

However, Don Balon report that Neymar has accepted that either Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo will pick up this year’s award.

It is a pretty reasonable assumption considering Ronaldo propelled Real Madrid to a league and Champions League double, and Messi dragged a bog average Argentina side through to the World Cup.

Therefore, the 25-year-old has decided he will try to win the World Cup in an attempt to win the 2018 award, claim Don Balon.

1. It is hardly ingenious – it is relatively logical that if a superstar player wins the most prestigious competition in world football that he will win the Ballon d’Or too. This is less of a plan and more common sense.

2. The article also implies that Neymar is aiming to win the World Cup so he can win the Ballon d’Or. Erm, that is nonsense – he just wants to win the World Cup.
