Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Babachir Lawal, has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Nigerians have credited his arrest to the explosive letter a concerned former president Obasanjo wrote detailing why current President Buhari should not contest again come 2019 presidential elections.
The EFCC Acting Head of Media and Publicity, Mr Samin Amaddin, confirmed Babachir Lawal’s arrest.
Babachir Lawal’s arrest is coming three months after he was sacked by President Muhammadu Buhari for allegedly violating the due process in the award of contracts under the Presidential Initiative on the North East (PINE).
After an eight-hour grilling, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission( EFCC) on Wednesday detained Mr. Babachir Lawal.
Mr Amaddin said the former SGF is cooperating with investigators and has been making useful statements, adding that his interview with the anti-corruption agency would continue on Thursday.
EFCC had set up a crack team to probe the fraud allegations levelled against Lawal three days after Babachir Lawal was suspended.
A source in the anti-graft agency had said the team, made up of special investigators from the EFCC, would examine all the details relating to the N200m contract for the cutting of grass in the North East linked to the former SGF.
Although the former SGF was earlier suspended on April 20, 2017, President Buhari had appointed Mr Boss Mustapha on October 30, 2017, to replace Lawal.
The Presidency was, however, hit with heavy criticism that the former SGF must be investigated after being sacked.
Now that former SGF, Babachir Lawal has finally been arrested by the EFCC, many Nigerians believe the long awaited arrest is a direct result of the letter written to President Buhari by Olusegun Obasanjo two days ago.
Some of the reactions read:
For the purpose of 2019 re election bid and to try to clean up it already battered image, Buhari orders the arrest and detention of Babachir Lawal by the EFCC.
Which mugu one fall for this one?
Why did it take one year to arrest Babachir Lawal? Is it because former President Obasanjo spoke up yesterday? It’s too late to deceive Nigerians.
