Former Ekiti State governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi was yesterday named the chairman of the Presidential Convention Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The development has heightened expectations that Fayemi may be picked as the running mate to whoever emerged as the presidential candidate. His name was shortlisted after many chieftains of the party opposed the speculated Muslim-Muslim ticket.
The national chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, who inaugurated the committee, named the former governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, as chairman, Alhaji Kawu Baraje, deputy chairman and Dr Alex Ideh as alternate secretary of the committee
Oyegun said, each member of the committee was painstakingly chosen based on recognition of their high-standing and good reports in the society.
According to the party chairman, the committee would conduct the party primaries where former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, former head of state, General Mohammadu Buhari, Kano State governor, Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, publisher of Leadership Newspaper, Mr Sam Nda Isaiah, among others, are vying to fly the party flag for the top office.
Still speaking at the inauguration of the 24-man committee, Oyegun promised Nigerians that the convention would be credible and transparent.
He charged the committee to prove their detractors wrong, who always castigated the party as a bunch of strange bedfellows.
He said: “You will recall that at every stage of our existence, there were prophets of doom, particularly coming from our opponent, from the other side.
