The Department of State Services, Imo State Command, has arrested a three-man gang of kidnappers accused of terrorising the South-East and the South-South zones.
The Director of the DSS in the state, Mr. Francis Ejiofor, while parading the three-man kidnap gang, led by one Henry Chibueze, aka Vampire, said with the arrest of the gang, kidnapping in Imo State would soon be a thing of the past.
It was gathered that the gang also operated in other states of Nigeria, Cameroon, Congo and Ivory Coast.
Chibueze, a native of the Nwangele Local Government Area of Imo State, and his gang members were said to have attempted to kidnap some judges at the Disney Hotel on Onitsha Road, Owerri, when they were apprehended.
Another member of the gang, Akeem Bello, said to be a former soldier was alleged to have given the gang security cover with his identity card.
Sources within the DSS said the gang had carried out a series of operations in the state during which they killed most of their victims.
One of the sources said, “The gang was behind the kidnap and subsequent killing of the wife of a traditional ruler and the assassination of a commissioner in the state.”
Chibueze told our correspondent that he equally killed his girlfriend, identified as Sandra.
He said, “She died for stealing a sum of N45m which was my share from the kidnap of a man from Omoku, Rivers State. We collected a ransom of N110m before the man was released.
Some relatives of Chibueze, including a pregnant woman, were also arrested for allegedly aiding him.
Also paraded along with the kidnappers were serial rapists and cultists from some of the tertiary institutions in the country.
