Some suspected kidnappers have abducted the mother in-law of the Olugbo of Ugboland, Oba Fredrick Akinruntan, Mrs. Omogbene Adeborile, in Igbotako town in the Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State.
Omogbene is the wife of Chief Babatunde Adeborile, the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Igbotako Ward II.
Omogbene was said to have been abducted by gunmen in Igbotako in Ondo State.
The News Agency of Nigeria also reports that Omogbene was abducted on Saturday at her residence at about 10pm.
The 70-year-old woman was reported to have been taken away by the hoodlums who stormed the town in a Toyota Camry and shot sporadically into the air to scare away the people.
One of the residents, who spoke on condition of anonymity to NAN said he initially thought that the gunmen were robbers.
He said, “I was in my house when I heard gunshots. I thought they were armed robbers; I scampered for safety and started praying.
“I later learnt that eight gunmen took mama (Omogbene) into a waiting vehicle and escaped before the police came.”
Efforts to get a member of the Adeborile family to comment on the incident proved abortive.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Isaac Eke,who confirmed the incident , said though details were still sketchy, his men were already on the trail of the kidnappers.
He said, “We received a report on the matter. Investigation is going on to unravel those behind the abduction. We are on top of the situation.’’
A member representing Okitipupa Irele Federal Constituency of the state, Mike Ogbehin, said the hoodlums carried out their evil act unchallenged because they were heavily armed.
He called on security agents to ensure the release of the victim and beef up security in the area, saying the people now lived in fear.
The Caretaker Chairman, Okititipupa LGA, Chief Solomon Bitire, said, “The incident is true. The commissioner of police is aware. I will be meeting him over the matter.”
