Jailed Nollywood actress: I started begging my victim’s family from day one – Ibinabo Fiberesima weeps

Following the five-year jail term slammed on her by Justice Deborah Oluwayemi of a Lagos High Court for reckless driving that cost a life, Ibinabo Fiberesima of the Actors Guild of Nigeria says she has learnt not to trust anyone and revealed how she had pleaded with the deceased’s family since the incident.

The embattled Nollywood actress was sentenced for the death of one Dr Giwa Suraj who she killed in an auto accident along Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lagos.

Ibinabo recently told Newsmen that she has come to accept her fate, disclosing that, “I am always praying for the family of the accident victim, Dr. Giwa Suraj.

“I almost committed suicide the first time I was jailed. Since the incident happened, I have learnt how not to trust anybody any more. I put my trust now in the Lord and this is better explained in the new song I recorded. The music captures my story.

“Emotionally, I have been drained and to some extent humiliated, even in public. I wasn’t happy that I was involved in that accident. I have said it over and over again that I’m deeply sorry that it ever happened.

“I don’t know how else to atone for the accident. I started begging my victim’s family from the very day the accident happened. My family attended the funeral rites and service of songs and I even attended the 40 days prayer when I was not strong enough to move about.

“I met with the mother and the wife of the deceased. There’s virtually nothing I didn’t do to plead with the family of the deceased to let me off the hook. I’m still pleading with them as I speak with you right now, even though they banned me from coming to see them, they warned me to stop coming to their house. So, I can only pray for them and that’s what I did always.”

Ibinabo also lamented a situation where members of the Guild would always refer to her prison ordeal each time they want to attack her person.

“Every time they want to throw things at me, they would bring it up. I didn’t steal anybody’s money and I am not a criminal,” she averred.

  1. Whatever happened it has been destined to be, my dear please take heart it can happen to anyone,Life is in stages that is another chapter your life. Remember life must goes on

  2. We are all flesh, and nobody above mistake, wat will be will be, if God say yes who’s on earth can say no to it, it has been written by God that’s how he will end his journey, pls lets us have God fearing heart to forgive each other

  3. Do you mean that stealing money or being a thief is worse than taking a life? Mind you a life was involved! I know the 5 year jail term will not bring Dr Giwa back but due process must be followed. You shld also be careful about your choice of words regarding this issue. If the family of the diseased barred you from visiting them, it is quite understandable; a budding life was wasted for goodness sake! I know the family will surely forgive you but it is still fresh in their memories. May God help you IB to wade through this trying period in your life.

    • You did not understand what she said. She was saying she did not do it willingly and that for person to still money is an intentional act.

  4. It is quit unfortunate that this is happening to you. No body is above mistake, I just pray that God should rewrite d court judgement, nothing imposible for the Lord to do, just file ur case in d upper court, continue begging the victim family and lastly pray to God

  5. Ibinabo needs to know that people find it difficult to forgive her because she was under the influence of alcohol as at the time the offence was committed. A decent person doesn’t drink to the extent of being controlled by it. The question I want to ask is: has she stopped drinking alcohol? If her answer is NO then she has not repented and can still kill innocent people again. If she has stopped drinking then she is remorseful .In short, she needs to stop drinking and accept Jesus Christ as her Lord and Saviour . God bless you

  6. Ibinabo must be mad,she is really crazy
I wonder what she meant by saying she had begged the family of the deseasec to let her off the hook
One would had thought Ibinabo is educated enough to know that the case is mainly between her and the Lagos state government
She can abologise to Dr Diwa’s family for causing them so much pain and sorrow, fair enough
But that does obviate the fact that she deserves jail sentence for killing someone due to drunk driving
It would had been a huge injustice to the dead and his relatives if Ibinabo had been let off

  7. You are being punished for the offence committed moreover your offence committed is greater than stolen money.Life was wasted

  8. I find it hard to believe you’if you have been this humble from the very start things won’t have gotten out of place the way it is right now.

  9. Reading some of the comments can annoy one, you do the crime- you do the time! Simple. Ignorance and intention is what the law by sentencing her is trying to correct in her, she drank intentionally and therefore ignored the law and care she ought to have for other members in the society that now led to someone death. We always think that abeg abeg will/or should solve any misdemeanor/felony after we have sobered up. Come try that in England and see what you will get, it should be different anywhere in the world and I am pleased that our legal system is now to some extent meeting up to its call.
