The Ogun State government has said that seven survivors of last Friday’s collapsed Itoku Market Shopping Complex were responding to treatment.
The Commissioner for Health, Babatunde Ipaye, stated this on Saturday while conducting journalists round the ward of the State Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta, where the victims were admitted.
The survivors took time to talk to journalists, confirming that they were getting better, as against the pains initially experienced, shortly after the accident.
Those still receiving treatment include: Adewunmi Tolulope(20), Oluwaseun Afolabi(23), Kehinde Akeem(38), Oluwalose Oluga(40); and Afusa Adisa(30), while two others have been discharged.
Speaking further, the commissioner said eight victims were headed for the hospital, but one of them died in transit, while the seven others survived.
According to Ipaye, the most affected of the patients was Afusat Adisa, who had a ruptured bladder, but a successful operation was carried out on her.
The health commissioner, who was accompained by his Information counterpart, Dayo Adeneye, and Medical Director of the State Hospital, Kayode Oladeinde, said aside from the two already discharged, four others were billed for discharge in the next 24 hours, having found them medically fit.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship candidate in Ogun state, Nasiru Isiaka, the Chairman of the Unity Party of Nigeria, UPN, in the state, Funmilayo Irede, as well as the Senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial district, Prince Lanre Tejuoso, expressed sympathies with families and relations of those who died and those who sustained injuries.
While both Isiaka and Irede called for probe of the incident, Senator Tejuoso expressed confidence that state government would do everything possible to ensure that those trapped in the rubbles of the collapsed building are rescued.
According to Isiaka, “It is with deep pain and heavy heart that I am commiserating with the injured, the families of the dead, the good people of Ogun State and the Government of Ogun State. I pray to the Almighty Allah to replenish the state of health of the injured with quick recovery and to give the families of the dead ones the fortitude to bear the regrettable loss.”
