Lagos ASUU laments attack on national body by UNILORIN branch

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Lagos zone, have condemned the alleged attack on the national body by the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) chapter.

The National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU had criticised the appointment of Prof. Ishaq Oloyede as registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), shortly after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State.

Oloyede, who was the immediate past vice chancellor of UNILORIN was said to be popular among the factional ASUU members in the university.

Following the report, the factional members of UNILORIN ASUU, led by Dr. Usman AbdulRaheem, swiftly condemned the position of its national body against the new JAMB helmsman.

AbdulRaheem, according to reports cautioned the executives of the union against such comment, which he described as reckless.

But the Coordinator of ASUU, Lagos zone, Prof. Olusiji Sowande, while addressing newsmen yesterday at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) ASUU secretariat over the insensitivity of government on the union’s demands, berated the UNILORIN group for their action, which he described as a sponsored propaganda.

According to Sowande: “The group are not authentic ASUU members, they are Oloyede’s cronies and allies, who have turned the institution to a garrison. Until they act in accordance with ASUU charter, they cannot relate with us. We have a legitimate group at UNILORIN that are recognised as our members. Those you call ASUU ab’ initio are not our members.

“It is no longer news that UNILORIN is now infamous as the most militarised campus in Nigeria. Security agents of the Nigerian state are routinely deployed to harass, intimidate and terrorise our members. The university also issues frivolous queries to our ASUU executive members in the branch.”
