Wayne Rooney is giving Jose Mourinho the same problem as every other manager

Wayne Rooney is causing Jose Mourinho the same problem as he’s been giving every other manager over the last few years, according to Gary Neville.

Yet again, it comes down to where to play the Manchester United and England captain.

Upon Mourinho’s arrival at Old Trafford, he quickly asserted that he saw Rooney as a striker. It went against the sense Rooney was becoming more of a midfielder, with both Louis van Gaal and Roy Hodgson having deployed him further back.

However in the derby defeat to Manchester City, Mourinho moved Rooney from the No.10 position out to the right wing.

Neville thinks that Mourinho will have to eat his words over playing Rooney as one of his strikers.

‘Wayne Rooney moving from No.10, he [Mourinho] said he’s a No.10. He’s now a right winger. He’s having the same deliberations around Wayne Rooney’s position that the last four or five managers have had that have managed him,’ Neville said on his Sky Sports podcast.

‘Do you play him No.10? Do you play him at centre forward? Do you play him in midfield? Do you play him on the left wing?

‘The reality is Wayne Rooney will have to play in different positions and Jose Mourinho has obviously seen that today. He wanted to get more strength into midfield with Pogba and Fellaini in front of Herrera and Rashford came on on the left.’

Rooney’s position came up last week when he played in midfield for England, seemingly against the wishes of Sam Allardyce who had named him as No.10. Rooney played it down though: ‘Too much is getting made about it,’ he said.

  1. Na him life be that

  2. Good for him

  3. why cant Mourinho cant sold him

  4. The coach reserves the right to play any player in any position he feels can bring about best performance. Any player who is against this right should resign to become a coach and then allow his players to dictate where to play. That’s all.
