Guardiola has already seen success in the Manchester derby earlier this season when his side dominated in a 2-1 win against United on September 10, and he will again meet his old rival Mourinho in the week commencing October 24.

Liverpool will host Tottenham Hotspur in the other eye-catching tie of the draw as Jurgen Klopp looks to go one better than his side’s defeat in the final last time around, while Antonio Conte’s Chelsea will travel across the capital to take on West Ham at the London Stadium.

Elsewhere, Arsenal will play Reading at the Emirates after beating Sky Bet Championship side Nottingham Forest 4-0 at The City Ground.

Manchester United avoided a fourth straight defeat by beating Northampton Town 3-1 at Sixfields on Wednesday night to book the tie against City, whose 2-1 win over Swansea was marred as Vincent Kompany was forced off injured on his comeback.

Full fourth-round draw:

West Ham v Chelsea

Manchester United v Manchester City

Arsenal v Reading

Liverpool v Tottenham

Bristol City v Hull City

Leeds v Norwich

Newcastle v Preston

Southampton v Sunderland
