Messi out three weeks after groin injury resurfaces in Barca’s 1-1 draw with Atletico

Lionel Messi will be sidelined for the next three weeks after his groin problem resurfaced in Barcelona’s 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.

With Barca leading by one goal up in the second half, the Argentine dropped to the pitch, having struggled since reappearing after half-time.

Arda Turan was readied and came on his place, with Angel Correa grabbing Atletico’s equaliser almost immediately.

Barcelona confirmed that Messi suffered a groin strain after the game.

The Catalan side had already lost Sergio Busquets to injury, with the midfielder replaced by Andre Gomes immediately after the restart.

Messi missed his country’s recent World Cup qualifier against Venezuela — having played with the injury against Uruguay — after injuring his groin against Athletic Bilbao in a league game at the end of August.

Following his return to Spain, he quickly got back into the action against Alaves, coming on as a second-half substitute in the 2-1 defeat earlier this month.

He has since played 90 minutes in comfortable wins over Celtic and Leganes and in the Champions League and La Liga respectively.
