In what was a frustrating afternoon at Old Trafford, Jose Mourinho turned to his substitutes to break down a stubborn Stoke side who are yet to find a Premier League win this season.

Stand in goalkeeper Lee Grant did his utmost to keep Mark Hughes’ side in with a chance of picking up an unlikely point with numerous impressive saves to deny both Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba.

Wayne Rooney, starting his third game in a row from the sidelines, was introduced in a double substitution with around 25 minutes remaining as United struggled to break down Stoke.

Moments after joining the game, Rooney linked up with Martial who fired in his brilliant right-footed winner to leave bottom-placed Stoke resigned to yet another defeat.

United looked to be coasting to victory when a left footed shot from Glen Johnson was parried to Xherdan Shaqiri who, in turn, hit the crossbar before the ball fell to Joe Allen to fire into the roof of the net

It was a valiant effort from the Potters who will be delighted with a share of the spoils.
