During the height of his career, Riise played alongside two of the most renowned one-club players in Europe in Gerrard and Totti, and has named the pair the best he has ever played with.

“Totti is god in Rome. Gerrard is ‘Captain Fantasic’ in Liverpool,” Riise said. “They’re different players.

“Gerrard was the more complete player. He had everything – power, stamina, shooting, heading, passing – and can play in different positions.

“Totti was a God. Technically he was a genius, tactically he was very good. He’s a great person and gave his all on the pitch.

“They’re the two best players I’ve played with.”

Riise established himself as one of the finest full-backs in the Premier League when at Anfield and was a fan favourite in Rome, but refused to choose a favourite from the two.

“Obviously, in Liverpool I was there for seven years and won the Champions League, the FA Cup, and the other trophies. That’s the most successful time of my career. With the fans, it was one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“But at the same time, when I go to Rome even now, it’s been many years since I left, but the fan support for me is still amazing.

“I really, really enjoyed my time in Rome. So those two clubs will always be in my heart.

“But the seven years in Liverpool were the best in terms of trophies. It’s impossible to compare. They’re two amazing clubs and I’m fortunate to play for both of them. But I cannot choose, I don’t want to choose.”
