The Arsenal forward had frustrated Arsene Wenger and fans alike for not living up to his promise for years and blowing very hot and cold throughout a season.

Walcott himself had grown exasperated at life at Arsenal and he blamed his French boss for the cycle he had become stuck in where he would return from injury, make a promising return, tail off, get dropped or injured and then repeat.

Games: 9

Goals: 5

Assists: 2

But the 27-year-old had a moment of realisation in February that has seen him turn his career around and put himself in contention to start in Gareth Southgate’s first match in charge for England against Malta, according to the Telegraph.

Walcott discovered Wenger and his staff felt that his ability to blow hot and cold from one game to the next summed him up and that sparked a sudden shift in his mentality.

The England international put in extra work on the training ground, arranged extra personal trainer shifts and made sure he heads to Arsenal’s facilities on his days off.

He changed his diet to take in more protein, less coffee and no snacks and he’s started to focus on the mental side of his game too – booking weekly meetings with Arsenal psychologist David Priestly.

The results have been evident this season, with his defensive as well as his offensive work being credited by Wenger.

His challenge now is to maintain his form, but if he can, it will feel like Arsenal have made a new signing.
