Striking Bayelsa teachers meet Governor Dickson, agree to resume work‎

Striking Teachers of government ‎owned primary and secondary schools in Bayelsa on Thursday met with Governor Seriake Dickson over issues of unpaid salaries and allowances, declaring readiness to resume teaching following agreement on the modalities of payment of salaries.


The Bayelsa Governor, Hon. Seriake Dickson, in a statement issued on Thursday by the State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon. Jonathan Obuebite, expressed sadness that up till now students in public schools are still at home and noted ‎that they would be lagging behind compared to their mates in other states and schools.

‎According to the Statement, ‎the meeting between the State Governor, Hon. Seriake Dickson and the Teachers was in commemoration of the 2016 World Teachers Day and it was used to address some of the challenges faced by teachers in the state.

According to the Statement, “At the meeting solutions were proffered and the governor also thanked the principals for their show of understanding and support so far to his administration.”

“The Governor pointed out that teachers are group of people in the society that he holds in high esteem because of their role in molding future generations and as a result his government will never toy with them.”

“Dickson after listening to some of the complaints by some principals assured them that henceforth teachers would be paid first every month.”

“To achieve that he said a new bank would be used for teachers alone to avert any form of delay in payment and he used the meeting to recognise and congratulate some honest and dedicated principals like Mr Hitler the principle of CSS Elegbegbiri who refunded money that was over paid to his school.”

“One after the other the teachers poured encomium on the governor, describing him as friendly and promised to return to the classroom as soon as possible.”

“After the meeting that the sincerity of the governor to ensure that schools are open for academic work tells a lot about his commitment for education.”

“They commended the State Governor, Hon. Seriake Dickson for addressing the challenges of the teachers despite provocative utterances and actions by some disgruntled politicians and appeal to the teachers to reciprocate his effort and always support the government.”
