Wenger will stay for another year – Cazorla

Santi Cazorla has said he believes Arsene Wenger could stay on as Arsenal manager after this season, despite his contract expiring in the summer.

Speculation around Wenger’s future is set to continue until the end of the season, with the 66-year-old Frenchman having said he will not decide whether to renew his contract until then and having been linked with the England job.

But midfielder Cazorla said the Frenchman has shown no sign of being ready to leave the Emirates, telling Spanish radio station Cope: “The boss has not indicated that this will be his last year. Not at all.

“He is fully focused on this season, and I do not know what he is planning for the future. I do not rule him out continuing another season because he has not said he will leave.

“It is in his hands, and he is the one who has to make the decision — but today I would say that he may continue.”

On Thursday, Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis said Wenger and the club would come to “a mutual decision as to how long he’ll continue.”

“Both need to be on the same page on that,” Gazidis added.

Wenger, who celebrated his 20th anniversary at Arsenal last weekend, is under pressure to deliver a first Premier League title since 2004.

Cazorla said: “Many times we talked about what we have lacked to win the Premier League in recent seasons, because we have always had opportunities to fight for the title.

“Last season, when teams like Manchester United, Chelsea or Manchester City were not doing well, we had a chance to win — but due to our inconsistency we didn’t take it.

“We know that we have to be consistent. We cannot drop points in certain matches, because at the end of the season those points could cost us the Premier League title.”
