The 46-year-old is alleged to have invested in two partnerships set up by Ingenious, an investment firm with a shady reputation.

Southgate joined back in 2004 while he was still a player, and is one of a number of high-profile footballers to have been involved with the company.

According to the Daily Mirror, Ingenious owes £620million to HM Revenue and Customs and is being chased up for this unpaid bill.

David Beckham and Gary Lineker have also been involved with the company, which was set up to help boost the British film industry.

This revelation couldn’t have come at a worse time for England, with Sam Allardyce recently sacked as Three Lions boss after being filmed giving advice to undercover journalists posing as agents on how to get around the Football Association’s rules on third-party ownership.

The FA have so far refused to comment on the story, with a spokesperson saying: ‘This is a private matter.’

Southgate takes charge of his first England game against Malta on Saturday.
