Ikpeba blames Omeruo for Zambia goal

Nigeria Football Federation Technical Committee member Victor Ikpeba has blamed Kenneth Omeruo for the goal the Super Eagles conceded in their 2-1 opening Group B win in a FIFA 2018 World Cup qualifier against Zambia at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium yesterday.

The former Nigeria forward, however, hailed the heroics of Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Carl Ikeme who made six saves in the encounter.

The Super Eagles were two goals up at half-time, thanks to goals from Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho but conceded a goal with 20 minutes left to play off a defensive mistake from Kenneth Omeruo who stumbled under pressure from Collins Mbesuma and the Highlanders Park striker fired in from close range.

“His (Omeruo) timing was poor. The goalkeeper had no fault. He should have cleared his lines,” Ikpeba said during his analysis on television after the game.

“Ikeme was brilliant in goal for the Eagles and the Zambians didn’t play well in the first half and could not curtail the nice inter-play of the Nigerian forwards Kelechi Iheanacho, Alex Iwobi and Mikel Obi.”

The win ended Zambia’s invincibility at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.
