Pogba, who has been heavily criticised since his world record transfer from Juventus to Manchester United, picked the ball up from distance and rifled a powerful strike past Everton goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg.

Stekelenburg, earning his 57th cap for Holland, will be disappointed in his efforts to save Pogba’s shot after his diving hand wasn’t strong enough to keep the ball out.

Having become infamous for his ‘dab’ celebration, the Manchester United midfielder did not celebrate his thunderbolt strike and offered no emotion after Stekelenburg palmed the ball into the net.

Starting in a deeper midfield role alongside Blaise Matuidi, Pogba looked like he was playing with a point to prove after being criticised by France coach Didier Deschamps earlier in the week.

‘Paul can and must do better. He knows that,’ Deschamps said after France’s 4-1 win over Bulgaria last week.

With those words ringing in his ears, Pogba marched out onto the Amsterdam ArenA with the determination of living up to the hype that comes with a huge transfer fee.

The £89million man did his best to dictate play throughout the game, his trademark runs from deep had Daley Blind and the Dutch defence looking uncomfortable as the French attack linked up with impressive quality.

However, France failed to put the game to bed after a powerful header from Pogba was saved by Stekelenburg, giving the Netherlands some extra motivation.

Memphis Depay and Vincent Janssen did their best to pull the Oranje level but couldn’t find a way past Hugo Loris as Pogba showed his defensive prowess with a series of dogged tackles to scrape a valuable away win.

The victory sees France go top of World Cup qualifying Group A, Holland dropping down to third place behind Sweden.
