More FAAN general managers resign over ‘right placement’ exercise

There are indications that some of the top personnel demoted last week in the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, may have resigned their appointments with the agency.

A source close to the agency said yesterday that some of them were demoted from Grade Levels 17, 16 and 15 to GL 10, 12, 15 and 16 after the right placement exercise that swept at least 22 Directors, General Managers, Deputy General Managers and Assistant General Managers.

A particular Acting Director was massively demoted from GL 17 to 10 by the exercise for being “inappropriately placed by the government” while some of the demoted personnel were also ordered to make some refunds to the government.

But, it was learnt that rather than report to their hitherto junior officers and their new office, some of the affected personnel decided to resign their appointments with the agency.

Five of the former General Managers who spoke under condition of anonymity said they had already tendered their resignation letters shortly before the receipt of the letters as they got wind of the exercise 48 hours earlier.

The Federal Government had on Wednesday begun the restructuring exercise in FAAN with the demotion of some directors and several General Managers of the agency even as the Ministry of Transportation insisted that the new positions are the officials’ appropriate grade levels.

The Winifred Oyo-Ita led-committee on restructuring of the aviation agency had recommended proper placement of personnel in all the aviation agencies.

Some of the general managers are said not to have the requisite qualifications to man some of the sensitive positions they held, as some of them, including deputy general managers, were said to have left universities less than 12 years ago and could not have qualified for the office they held.

Equally affected are virtually all the directors, but an influential female director and the Managing Director, Engr. Saleh Dunoma were spared the sacking and demotion sprees.

An Acting Director of Finance was demoted to from GL 17 to 10 and redeployed to the department of Information Communication and Technology, ICT, while a particular General Manager was moved from GL17 to 15.
