FRSC records 313 road crashes, 143 deaths nationwide in two weeks

According to reports, the Federal Road Safety Commission on Tuesday said it had recorded 143 deaths from 313 road crashes in two weeks nationwide.


Statistics made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja by Bisi Kazeem, the Head Media Relations and Strategy, said the crashes involved 502 people in weeks 40 and 41, 2016.

Kazeem said that 899 people were injured in the crashes, while 1, 044 people were rescued without injury.

He said that 41,190435 people traveled within the period, while 368, 990 vehicles traveled across the country.

He said that 20,578 traffic offenders were apprehended for 22,712 offences nationwide.

The media officer added that 9,821 traffic offenders were educated and 591 persons were convicted in 27 mobile courts, while 83 were discharged and acquitted.

Kazeem said: “Within that same period of weeks 40 and 41, 995 special marshals were also on patrol and one special marshal lost his life.’’

Kazeem said from the statistics, the number of crashes reduced by four per cent and the number of people rescued without injury increased by 30 per cent.

He said although deaths from road crashes reduced by 11 per cent as compared to the previous weeks, there was still need to be cautious on the road and obey traffic rules.
