Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has emphatically hit back at critics of his recent performances after he played a starring role in last night’s Champions League win over Lyon.
Chelsea loanee Juan Cuadrado struck a sublime winner in France as Juve snatched a 1-0 win that owed much to Buffon’s heroics between the sticks.
The 38-year-old saved a penalty from Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette and also did well to keep out Nabil Fekir as Juve played much of the second half with ten men.
This match-winning display came after come costly errors in recent games for club and country, but Buffon was in defiant mood afterwards.
‘People can organise my funeral, but there’s nobody there,’ he told Italian TV.
Juve legend Gianluigi Buffon silences the haters with brilliant put-down
‘I have said many times, without arrogance, that I am very self-critical and don’t need to listen to others who try to use situations to disrespect and show a lack of fairness to people.
‘I’ve heard many stupid things in recent weeks, but just one true comment: “I expect more from Buffon.”
‘That is true and I agreed with that wholeheartedly.’
