Nigerians elected me to spread wealth not poverty – Jonathan

Former president Goodluck Jonathan has, Monday, said that he was never elected as Nigeria’s president to spread poverty but to generate and spread wealth.

Jonathan who spoke at the Oxford Union, with the theme ‘Fostering Youth Entrepreneurship, and succeeding US Secretary of State who spoke at the same event in May this year, said that only being entrepreneurial can completely cure poverty and not having a job or working for someone.

“I once said that I was not elected President of Nigeria to spread poverty; I was elected to generate and spread wealth.”

“My belief in this regard is that getting a job or being a worker cannot completely cure the disease of poverty.

It is only your own business that can provide such security and give you the financial freedom you need to prosper.” Dr. Jonathan, whose speech was streamed live, rhetorically queried his audience asking why some nations are rich and others remain poor.

”Why are some nations rich and some poor?

Why do individuals that grow up in similar circumstances end up differently, with some as successes and others as failures?” “Is the wealth of nations a result of geography, weather, culture, destiny, etc.? What could a leader do to effectively lift a people out of the depths of poverty and enable them to achieve prosperity?” asked Jonathan.

The former Nigerian leader talked about youth entrepreneurship programs his administration pioneered, saying that one of them, YouWIN, was a major plank of his job creation efforts.

“The motivation for this program is for young people to go into SMEs, create jobs for other young people with the expectation that some would grow to large scale businesses” Dr. Jonathan said.

He concluded his speech by giving a short brief of his achievements in the economic sphere, saying, “Under my watch, Nigeria was projected by CNN Money to be the third fastest growing economy in the world for the year 2015 and rated as the largest economy in Africa and the 23rd largest in the world by the World Bank and the IMF, with a GDP above half a Trillion US dollars.”

The speech was streamed live via Dr. Jonathan’s Facebook page and will be hosted on the Oxford Union’s site.

Previous speakers at the Oxford Union include the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, author of 48 laws of power, Robert Greene, the Dalai Lama, former British prime ministers Winston Churchill, Edward Heath, Margaret Thatcher and John Major.

Others were Mother Teresa and former US presidents Richard Nixon (November 1978), Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton.

  7. I already knew that Jonathan is daft, but I never knew it’s so bad
He says he came to spread wealth
I wonder how many of the poor Nigerians that became wealthy through his corruption infested design
This is a dummy only noted for donning an Uncle Tom bowler hat, with oversize traditional dress to mismatch and always putting up a vacant smile that manifested a deep seated inner emotional instability
He came to destroy and retard Nigeria by supervising the worst type of public fund looting, where billions upon billions were stolen left, right and centre
    What a shame

Wow! wow!! wow!!! @Nnanna its so sad to see you exhibit your level of ignorance and half baked education on this platform. You stated that, “he s there doing recession dat hv not yeilded anytin for us”. Its so glaring that you don’t understand the meaning of RECESSION talkless of its impact on the economy. Recession is not an economic program introduced by PMB, its the current state of Nigeria’s economy. it is not something new. It is common in every economy and if u an economy is buoyant enough you will feel the impact. it is a temporary state of an economic decline due to reduction is GDP caused by reduction of trading activities. I guess u know by now that Nigeria’s main source of revenue is oil and the price of oil is currently down, which is also affecting every major all producers of the world. To add insult to injury, ur brothers from S.S compounded our problems by truncating our production. In 2008 there was global recession and Nigeria didnt feel much impact because we had enough money in our treasury to cushion the effect. But today, reverse is the case because ur hero GEj and his cohort left nothing in the coffers. And when the govt goes broke, the resultant effect is what u are currently experiencing in Nigeria. To quote his finance Minister NOI, “….Nigeria had no political will to save” April 15 2016 Punch newspaper. From what i have stated above, it should be clear enough for you to know who is responsible for the current hardship being experienced by the economy.

  12. Jonathan tenure was good for many of us youth as he launched many youth oriented program that made so many Nigerian youths millionaires, whether you gullible Nigerians believe it or not thats your own cup of tea, i have never been into any government and will never be part of any, but i became a millionaire through the inventions of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan many youth entreprenuer program. I pity for you lot here saying rubbish as you all know a deformed mind is liable to not be informed. Buhari government is anti-youth i will tell you. Thinkers and young enterprenuer like myself and most of you on this platform will not pull through to the massive anti-youthism that this current admistration is gearing towards. Its not a crime for a young boy of 22 to be modeled into a change agent that will bring rich fortunes to members of its community, thats what the GEJ adminstration stands for. I dont know him i have never met him before in my life but friends and foes believe it or not Jonathan made so many youths young men and women millionaires and may God continue to bless him and for you lots that is criticizing him time will justify the mean, i know of that and it will be soon. Food for taught to you all. Note i am a young man of 32 and i know what i have achieved for my self since 2014, i pray you come back to complete the good you were about to give we the Nigerian youth.
