Reps summon IGP over extra-judicial killings

House of Representatives has summoned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Idris Ibrahim, over renewed cases of extra-judicial killings across the country.

Consequently, the House has resolved that the IGP and all culpable security agencies should appear before its joint Committee on Police Affairs and Human Rights to explain the rationale behind the steady rise of such incidences, and the steps taken to prevent reckless and avoidable killings.

The resolution was fallout of a motion under matters of urgent national importance on the need to investigate extra-judicial killings in Bayelsa state, sponsored by Douye Diri, who condemned the act, noting that the Nigerian Police and other security agencies saddled with the responsibility of protecting the citizens and visitors within the territorial jurisdiction of Nigeria, should discharge their functions with utmost care and respect for human life.

“In the last two weeks, the Nigerian Police Force, Bayelsa state Command/JTF, had shot and killed four innocent Nigerians, namely Innocent Kokorifa, 17. Others are Izu Joseph footballer with Shooting Stars Football Club of Ibadan, Inyan, a 30-year-old man, and Godgift Oduku five-year-old girl.

“The trend if not checked, may lead to a breakdown of law and order in a situation where the people will be forced to defend themselves from attacks from the very police who have been paid by the tax payers to protect them.”

Contributing, the chairman, Committee on Ethics and Privileges, Nicholas Ossai, frowned on the spate of impunity of security agencies, and called for proactive steps toward taming the attitude of security operatives which has led to the killing of several innocent Nigerians.

Also, the chairman, Committee on Public Petitions, Uzoma Nkem-Abonta, in a chat, condemned the breach of the citizens’ fundamental rights as guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

“What government should understand is that in the process of killing protesting students, members of organisations like IPOB and MASSOB, killing of Shi’ites, it is telling on our democratic credentials,” he said.
