Reps direct INEC to conduct outstanding elections in Rivers, Anambra

It was gathered that the House of Representatives on Tuesday directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct all outstanding elections in Rivers and Anambra states with immediate effect.

The House also mandated it’s committee on Legislative Compliance and Electoral Matters to ensure compliance with the resolution and confirm date of the elections to the House within two weeks.

The representatives adopted a motion of urgent national importance co-sponsored by Minority Leader of the House, Leo Ogor and five others.

According to the motion, persistent denial of affected constituencies and constituents a constitutionally guaranteed right to representation at the National Assembly is unacceptable.

The motion noted that INEC’S inability to conduct the outstanding elections have denied constituents in Anambra and Rivers states the right to participate in critical national issues in the National Assembly.

The sponsors who observed that INEC had successfully concluded peaceful elections in Bornu and other states in the crisis prone north-eastern part of the country, wondered why the commission refused to conduct the outstanding elections in about eight local governments of Rivers State, citing security concerns.

“INEC under Professor Attahiru Jega successfully conducted peaceful elections in Borno and other North Eastern states that were then faced with crisis chased by the activities of Boko Haram; yet the present leadership of INEC has consistently neglected, failed and/or refused to conduct elections in only about eight local governments in Rivers state, citing security concerns.”

“While almost all the states of the federation are adequately represented in the parliament in compliance with Sections 48, 49 and 91 of the constitution, Rivers state continues to be under-represented, particularly in the senate, where there is no senator due to INEC’s deliberate neglect and refusal to conduct the election.”

  1. Good one

  2. These so-called Reps amaze me, u know, talk is cheap, that’s why they go ahead passing all those their useless resolutions. Hv they bothered to find out from INEC why they hvn’t conducted the polls, I won’t be surprised if they didn’t. If those budget-padders must be told, they also pass resolutions compelling the security agencies to provide adequate security for the voters, INEC staff & materials especially the Youth Corpers otherwise, these Reps should go bring their relations to go conduct the elections.

  3. INEC know say, na PDP go win, so dem pay masters want to delay the elections until key PDP members out of hungry decamp to APC before they will conduct the elections. This is truly happening with the decamping of a Former Director of Finance of NDDC said to be a key member of PDP going to APC. Probably, they have also blackmailed him with EFCC arrest. It is difficult for any Director of Finance of NDDC hand not to touch Oil.
It is unbelievable that Rivers State is not participating in National Politics because it is known for Now an opposition party State. This sort of things do not happen in democracies where the Rulers are not unnecessarily desperate to hold onto power. Na God go save Nigeria if Buhari as President should loose an Election, he will kill everybody.
