The Spanish giants plan to appeal the decision to prevent them signing new players, and continue to identify top targets to strengthen their squad for next season.

Aguero has long been linked with a return to Madrid after shining at Atletico earlier in his career, though it would be a big surprise if City let such an important player go.

The Argentine has a superb record of 149 goals in 222 games since moving to England in 2011, firing the club to two Premier League titles and helping himself to the 2014/15 Golden Boot.

According to the Daily Mirror, Real are also looking at signing Borussia Dortmund star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who may be a more realistic target than Aguero at this stage.

Still, the 28-year-old’s future was thrown into some doubt last month when he was surprisingly dropped by manager Pep Guardiola for a Champions League away game at Barcelona.

Aguero has since returned to the side and featured in the home win over Barca this week, but Guardiola has hinted that he would not stop the player leaving if he wanted to.
