Sultan remains a symbol of stability, peace, unity In Nigeria, says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday noted that, the Sultan of Sokoto and President General, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, (NSCIA) Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar is a symbol of stability, peace and unity not just in the state, but also in the nation at large.


Buhari who was in Sokoto to witness the Durbar event held at the Shehu Kangiwa Square in honour of Sultan’s 10th anniversary, admitted that he was full of joy when he received the news of Sultan’s tenth year on throne.

Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi who read Buhari’s congratulatory message to Sultan before the heavily crowded spectators and dignitaries, prayed Almighty to continue to grant the respected religious cum traditional leader good health and prosperity.

Buhari had before the Durbar expressed confidence that the current challenges has no capacity to stop the nation’s greatness.

Speaking before inaugurating the 4.8bn 500-Units of Housing Estate built by Sokoto State Government at Kalambaina, in wamakko local government within the metropolis, assured that, he will continue to bring sustainable development to Nigeria

While insisting that, his administration will sustain the fight against corruption, Buhari added that improved security and welfare of Nigerians are amongst his cardinal objectives’.

Recalling how peaceful, disciplined, patriotic and committed to national development Nigerians were in the 60s, Buhari assured that, he was determined to restoring such patriotism

“Unfortunately, the situation had changed now, but we are committed to taking Nigeria to greatness”

Buhari after commending Sultan for his fearlessness and peace-making efforts which has built bridges of understanding and tolerance across borders of religion, region and ethnicity, appreciated the degree of support his government enjoys from the traditional leaders.

The president noted further that, the nation would surely move to the next level in the speed of time when we collectively work together for peace, unity and socio-economic development of the nation.

While admitting that, as both traditional and religious leaders, they play advisory roles, Sultan maintained that, the nation has committed leadership at all level that needed to be should be supported.

Sultan after calling on those clamouring for restructuring of Nigeria to have a rethink, added that, we all have no other country aside Nigeria.

“At occasion like this, one could be frightened to lack what to say but it is most important for that we appreciate Almighty Allah for His blessings. At least, the gathering today is a clear indication that we are gathered here today to foster unity, solidarity and show love as one people created by one God Almighty.

“We have had book launch to mark the event and looking at the gathering, one would believe that the trademark here in Sokoto within the last week showed the unity of Nigeria. Those clamoring for a divided Nigeria should see this today.

“We want to thank you all for the love, confidence and faith. If we have been doing wrong, nobody would have been here today. We have no other country but this, therefore, we should be able to do what we can to make us stay together in peace.

“When things go wrong, we will come up to tell and advise and when things go right, we will sit at the back and thank God, hence we have just started the beginning of a long journey to free Nigeria.

“We will support President Muhammadu Buhari, hundred percent. We have committed leaders at all levels and it is our duties to support them”

Sultan who decried that bad governance was responsible for most of the avoidable challenges confronting nations today, stressed that, bad governance, coupled with poverty and injustice could possibly lead to anarchy.

The celebrant warned that, no nation can develop when there is much injustice, hence calling on leaders to fear God and give justice to all irrespective of religion, region, ethnicity or political affiliation.

He conclusively called on Nigerians to wade off laziness and come out to work for the common good of all, just as he advised Nigerians to always come out and tell leaders the truth whenever they erred, and also commend them when and where necessary.

On his part, Sokoto state governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal admitted that Buhari was on the right track towards putting Nigeria on the pedals of development, hence according to Tambuwal, President Muhammadu Buhari has done excellently and is still doing well in the fight against corruption.

While admonishing Nigerians to be patient hence the recent recession will soon be a thing of the past.

Dignitaries who witnessed the Sultan 10th anniversary Durbar include, former president Olusegun Obasanjo who also rode on the horse as a traditional titleholder in the Seat of the Caliphate. Former vice president Atiku Abubakar, Senate President Bukola Saraki, Speaker Yakubu Dogara, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko.

Others include governors of Imo, Abia, Adamawa, Bauchi Kebbi, Niger, Zamfara, Rivers as well as members of the National Assembly.

Emirs of Kano, Argungu, Gusau, Attah Igala, Oni of Ife as well as majority of the first class traditional leaders across the country graced the occasion.
